Meet the Students from Howard University

Meet the students reporting from Wash., D.C.

— -- Candace Smith is a senior broadcast journalism major and the On Campus bureau chief.

Raised in State College, Pennsylvania, she cut her teeth as a journalist writing for the Centre Daily Times. Smith has interned for the Fox 5 and NBC News stations in Washington, D.C., and most recently, with ABC's "Good Morning America" in New York.

In the summer following her sophomore year, Smith attended the Institute on Political Journalism at Georgetown, University. Smith has also served as a Student Ambassador for Howard University and a member of student government.




Kyla C. Grant is a senior honors student pursuing a bachelor's degree in broadcast journalism. Born and raised in Detroit, Mich., Grant discovered her passion for reporting while interning at NBC affiliate, WDIV News-4 in high school. During her sophomore year in college she reported for the Howard University News Service where she had the opportunity to cover the historic 2008 Presidential Election and the 2009 Presidential Inauguration. Grant's most recent internship was with WTOP News Radio, in Washington, DC, where she wrote and edited radio scripts for the air and online.




Danielle Hopkins is a senior broadcast journalism major with a minor in political science. She was raised in Olympia Fields, a small suburb outside Chicago. Danielle's interest in news was sparked in high school when she was an editor of her school's newspaper. She has interned at WMAQ, the NBC Chicago affiliate. Her most recent internship was with NBC Washington affiliate WRC. Danielle has also served in Howard' student government and is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, an incorporated international service organization.




Aja Johnson is a sophomore broadcast journalism major with a minor in political science. A Chicago native, she discovered her love for journalism on a trip to Europe with the People to People Student Ambassadors Program. Aja writes for several on-campus publications and works as a reporter for Spotlight Network, the student-run on-campus news channel. Recently, Johnson interned in the press office with Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. on Capitol Hill.
