Why the state is significant:

• The Bluegrass state is a solidly red state; about 86 percent of the electorate are white voters.

• Kentucky voters have a nearly perfect record backing the general election winner in eight of the last ten presidential elections.

Fast facts:

• Instead of holding a primary like it usually does, Kentucky held its first Republican presidential caucus thanks to Sen. Rand Paul. To get around a Kentucky law that says no candidate’s name can be listed more than once on a ballot, Paul convinced GOP state party leadership to hold a caucus instead of a primary -- that way Paul could run for president and for re-election for his Senate seat. (Paul has since suspended his presidential campaign).

• Though voters in the state tend to favor the GOP candidate in the general election, there have been a few notable exceptions in recent electoral history: Jimmy Carter in 1976 and Bill Clinton in 1992 and 1996.
