Oct. 15, 2010— -- Laiea Smith was named managing editor of ABCNews.com in October 2010. Based in New York, she oversees all editorial content for the website.

Prior to her current assignment, Smith worked as a senior producer for "World News'" weekend edition and ABC's special events team.

She covered a wide range of events, including the 2008 presidential election, the passing of Sen. Ted Kennedy, the "miracle on the Hudson" and "Remembering Michael Jackson." In 2009, Smith was a member of the team that produced ABC's Emmy Award-winning presidential inauguration special.

Smith began her career at ABC News in 2000. From 2005 to 2008 Smith worked as a senior producer for ABCNews Now. She has served as a control room producer during breaking news events and worked in the field on breaking stories, including the 2005 return to flight shuttle launches and the passing of Pope John Paul II.

As a field producer Smith has traveled to Amman, Jordan, and Baghdad covering the Iraq war and was in the Gulf region during Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

A graduate of the University of Hawaii, Smith was raised on the Big Island of Hawaii and currently lives in New York City.
