Alabama hires ex-A&M coach Jeff Banks as special-teams boss

— -- TUSCALOOSA, Ala. --? Alabama?has hired Jeff Banks as its special-teams coordinator.

Banks, whose hiring was announced Thursday, spent the past five seasons as tight ends coach and special-teams coordinator for Kevin Sumlin at Texas A&M. The Aggies ranked third nationally in net punting and second in punt-return average last season.

Before coming to Texas A&M in 2013, Banks spent one season as Virginia's running backs coach and special-teams coordinator and nine years in the same roles at UTEP.

He has also worked as an assistant at Idaho State and was a graduate assistant at Washington State from 1998 to 2000.

Banks was a two-time all-conference punter at Washington State.
