— -- Augie Garrido is out as Texas baseball coach after 20 years and two national championships, taking a position as special assistant to the athletic director.

In a 48-year career at multiple schools, Garrido amassed a college baseball-best 1,975 wins and won five national championships.

"I owe everyone at The University of Texas a million heartfelt thank you's," Garrido said in a statement released by the university. "I came here to serve and I am so proud to be able to continue to serve The University in my new role as Special Assistant to Mike Perrin."

Garrido headlines the 2016 college baseball Hall of Fame class and will be inducted July 1-2 in Lubbock, Texas.

Garrido won the College World Series in four different decades. He won his first three with Cal State Fullerton in 1979, 1984 and 1995. He won two titles with the Longhorns, in 2002 and 2005.

"Augie and I met today and had a very good talk," Perrin said in the statement. "I asked him to serve as my special assistant and he has graciously accepted. We both care deeply for The University of Texas and our baseball program. I am beyond appreciative of all that Augie has done for Texas baseball and want to celebrate those successes. I'm happy he'll be continuing to work with me as a special assistant and looking forward to working with him in that role."

Garrido has been named coach of the year six times, but the Longhorns have fallen on hard times. They missed the tournament this season for the third time in five years and tied a program record with 32 losses.

The 77-year-old Garrido had one year left on his contract that paid him $1 million annually.

Heading into the Big 12 tournament, he had said that he would not quit and wanted to go out a winner.
