— -- The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed captain Dion Phaneuf to a seven-year contract extension, the team announced Tuesday.

Terms were not released, but a source confirmed to ESPN.com's Pierre LeBrun that the deal is worth a total of $49 million.

"This is a very proud day for me and my family," Phaneuf said in a statement released by the team. "I'm very honored to be the captain of this historic franchise and to maintain the opportunity to play and represent the Toronto Maple Leafs for many years to come."

In 39 games this season, the 28-year-old defenseman has four goals, 11 assists and leads the Leafs in plus-minus with a plus-13. He could have become an unrestricted free agent after the season.

"Dion is our team leader and has been a pillar in our building process," GM David Nonis said in a statement. "He has proven to be a very durable and reliable defenseman in all facets of the game. He plays big minutes in every situation for us."

Phaneuf ranks second among NHL defensemen in penalty minutes (207) over the past three seasons. Since his debut during the 2005-06 season, only nine other defensemen have averaged more goals per game than Phaneuf (.172).

In 639 career games with the Leafs and Calgary Flames, the three-time All-Star has 110 goals, 245 assists and 851 penalty minutes.
