Eli Manning hurts ankle vs. Redskins

— -- EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning left Sunday's 20-6 win against the Washington Redskins with what was later diagnosed as a high ankle sprain and did not return to the game.

Backup Curtis Painter played the second half at quarterback for the Giants and was 2 of 8 passing for 11 yards and an interception.

Manning was wearing a walking boot after the game, and used crutches when leaving MetLife Stadium.

"Rest for a few weeks and I'll probably be in a boot for a while, that's what they say with a high ankle sprain," Manning said. "Obviously I have time now, so I'll just rest it up and start rehabbing."

Manning was hit hard by defensive lineman Chris Baker while attempting a pass with a minute left in the second quarter. He had to be helped to his feet by an official and was limping badly, but he stayed in the game.

Manning's next pass was tipped by tight end Brandon Myers and picked off by Redskins cornerback Josh Wilson, his league-leading 27th interception of the year. Manning limped very slowly off the field and to the locker room.

"At this point I couldn't finish the game," Manning said. "I obviously wanted to. The doctor said it would not be a good decision, and I agreed with him. I don't think I could have been very effective playing after the injury."

With rookie Ryan Nassib on the inactive list, as he has been for every game this year, Painter was the only healthy and available Giants quarterback for the rest of the game.

Painter also had to play without many of the Giants' top offensive weapons. Wide receiver Victor Cruz was already out for this game, and wide receivers Rueben Randle (knee) and Hakeem Nicks (ankle) left the game due to injuries.

Manning has struggled all season behind a shoddy offensive line, and there has been some external talk the past few weeks about the wisdom of continuing to let him play.

But Manning rejected all such talk. Sunday marked his 151st consecutive start, and he has not missed a game since being named the Giants' starting quarterback during his 2004 rookie season.

Giants left tackle Will Beatty was carted off the field in the third quarter with a right leg injury. Coach Tom Coughlin said it is "a fracture of some type," but had no further information. Fellow offensive lineman James Brewer suffered an ankle injury and was also wearing a walking boot after the game.

Randle told reporters he came out of the game for precautionary reasons -- he missed practice time this week due to knee swelling. Nicks was not present in the Giants locker room when it opened to reporters after the game.
