— -- New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. lost his appeal of a one-game suspension and will not play against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday night, the NFL ruled Wednesday.

Beckham was flagged three times for personal fouls Sunday, as he grappled with Panthers cornerbacks Josh Norman and Cortland Finnegan throughout the game. The Panthers' defensive backs were also flagged, but Beckham's actions seemed more excessive, particularly when he rushed across the field to deliver a helmet-to-helmet hit on Norman at the end of a run play in which neither was involved.

The 23-year-old receiver was given a one-game suspension on Monday, with president of football operations Merton Hanks ruling that Beckham's actions put his opponents at unnecessary risk of injury.

Norman was fined $26,044 by the NFL for two incidents during Sunday's game, including striking Beckham in the head and neck area, a source confirmed to ESPN on Wednesday.

Beckham was in attendance for the appeal hearing, which was heard by James Thrash, one of two hearing officers appointed by the NFL and the players' union, at the league's offices in New York.

"To depict this as Odell Beckham being wrong, and the only one who's wrong, is not right, it's not fair, it's not justice and it's not the way it was," Giants coach Tom Coughlin said earlier Wednesday. "If you're naive enough to think that way, then you'd better do some soul-searching yourself.

"Beckham certainly was wrong, and we've said he was wrong from Day One. But there were factors involved, starting in pregame, which are well documented, which indicate that there was an attempt to provoke him. He was provoked. He was out of control, he was wrong, there's no doubt about that. You'd like that it didn't happen. But the fact of the matter is, the situation in the pregame with the baseball bat, and if you know what occurred at the very beginning of the game, you can understand that there were two sides to this and not just one."

The Giants need to win both of their remaining games and have the Washington Redskins lose both of theirs to have any chance of reaching the playoffs for the first time since 2011.

Beckham, who was selected to the Pro Bowl on Tuesday, has caught 91 passes for 1,396 yards and an NFL-high 13 touchdown receptions this season.
