— -- American swimmer Lilly King put her money where her mouth was and bested Russian Yulia Efimova for the gold in the 100-meter breaststroke Monday night.

King had been critical of Efimova over her reported history with drugs -- the Russian was barred from competition for 16 months and also tested positive for a now-banned substance, the Associated Press said.

After Efimova won her semi-final round Sunday, she wagged No. 1 with her finger. King, who was watching the race from a viewing area at the time, wagged her finger No. 1 as well.

"If that's what she feels she needs to be able to compete, whatever, that's her deal," King told reporters, according to the AP. "I'm here to compete clean for the U.S. and that's what I'm going to do."

King took the gold Monday with a time of 1:04.93, according to the AP.
