Seattle Mariners left-hander Robbie Ray will undergo flexor tendon surgery and miss the rest of the 2023 season, manager Scott Servais told reporters Wednesday.

Ray went on the injured list April 1 after failing to make it out of the fourth inning in his only start this season on March 31, a 9-4 Mariners loss to the Cleveland Guardians.

Ray, 31, has been incredibly durable for most of his career. Aside from the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, Ray has made at least 28 starts five times since 2016, including the 2021 season with the Toronto Blue Jays when he won the AL Cy Young Award after going 13-7 with a 2.84 ERA in 32 starts.

He signed a five-year, $115 million contract with the Mariners as a free agent after the 2021 season. In his first season with Seattle last year, Ray made 32 starts and was 12-12 with a 3.71 ERA.
