— -- The San Diego Padres are hiring Andy Green, third-base coach for the Arizona Diamondbacks, as their new manager, according to ESPN sources and multiple reports.

The Padres announced via Twitter they will hold a news conference at 6 p.m. ET at Petco Park to introduce a new manager.

Green, 38, played parts of four seasons in the majors before starting his coaching career in 2011. He completed his first season on Arizona's big league staff in 2015 and his 12th season in the Diamondbacks organization. He was 219-189 in four seasons as a manager in Arizona's farm system.

Green will replace interim manager Pat Murphy, who was hired after Bud Black was fired in June when the Padres were 32-33.

Murphy was fired earlier this month after the Padres finished the season 74-88 and fourth in the NL West, 18 games behind the division champion Dodgers.

The Padres were a disappointment this past season despite the aggressive offseason moves by rookie general manager A.J. Preller. Even with the addition of stars such as Matt Kemp, Justin Upton and James Shields and a bump in payroll past the $100 million mark for the first time, the Padres had their worst finish in four years.

San Diego has had five straight losing seasons and has missed the playoffs for nine straight years.

Green's hiring was first reported by Bleacher Report.
