Rafael Nadal advances to French Open semifinals, will face Diego Schwartzman
PARIS -- Rafael Nadal beat 19-year-old Jannik Sinner of Italy in straight sets in a French Open quarterfinal that ended at nearly 1:30 a.m. Wednesday in Paris.
Nadal won 7-6 (4), 6-4, 6-1 to reach the semifinals at Roland Garros for a record-extending 13th time.
He is a 12-time champion at the clay-court Grand Slam tournament and will face 12th-seeded Diego Schwartzman on Friday.
"Now I have, well, I would say two days off, but almost 1 1/2," Nadal said with a laugh after his win. "But, yes, now it's two days to practice, to rest a little bit and to recover, and just try to be ready for that semifinal."
It will be his 13th at Roland Garros and 34th at all Slams. He is 24-0 in semifinals and finals at the French Open, part of a 98-2 mark at the place he's dominated.
He has done pretty well against Schwartzman, too, owning a 9-1 head-to-head mark. Schwartzman, though, won the most recent meeting, on clay in Rome last month.
"I know ... that I can beat him," Schwartzman said. "That's important."
