— -- OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- The Baltimore Ravens have informed running back Justin Forsett that they will release him.

Forsett, 30, was benched in favor of Terrance West on Sunday and was inactive. He averaged 3.2 yards per carry in the first three games, which tied a career low.

"They wanted to go younger," Forsett told CSNMid-Atlantic.com. "I've been fired before. When I was inactive Sunday, I thought it might come."

Forsett also indicated on Twitter that he had been released.

With rookie Kenneth Dixon returning from a sprained knee, the Ravens now have three young backs along with West and Buck Allen. That made Forsett, who was making $3 million this season, expendable.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh was noncommittal when asked Monday whether Forsett had a spot on the roster.

"Justin Forsett is a highly respected, highly valued guy in my eyes," Harbaugh said Monday. "It's a competitive world that we're in. It's a competitive league and a competitive sport. He knows that, as well as anybody."
