Report: Bernard Schirmer arrested on suspicion of battery of game official

— -- A visiting offensive lineman from?Mt. San Antonio College is accused of punching a referee on the field during Saturday night's game against?Ventura College in Ventura, California, according to a report by the Ventura County Star.?

Bernard Schirmer was immediately ejected from the community college game and, upon review of the footage, arrested on suspicion of battery of a game official. He was then transferred to Ventura County jail, Sgt. Mike Pallotto of the Ventura College Police Department told the paper.

The incident occurred in the third quarter of Ventura College's 34-29 win, as the official was escorting Schirmer back to his huddle following a verbal dustup between opposing players.?

The official, whose name was not released, was removed from the game after being tended to by trainers from both teams.?

"I shook his hand when he was coming off, and I asked him if he was OK," Ventura College head coach Steve Mooshagian told the Ventura County Star. "He looked like he was a little drowsy."

According to the Mt. San Antonio College athletics website, Schirmer is a freshman offensive lineman from Lakewood High School. His hometown is listed as Long Beach, California.?
