Olympics Overview: Tennis

The Facts

WHERE: Tennis Centre, Sydney Olympic Park.

WHEN: Sept. 19-28.

MEDALS: There are 64 players in the men’s and women’s draws and 32 pairs in men’s and women’s doubles.

OUTLOOK: Olympic participation by top tennis stars tends to be spotty. Missing from Sydney will be Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras, Mary Pierce, Martina Hingis and Nathalie Tauziat, all in the top 10. David Cup captain John McEnroe declined an invitation to coach the U.S. men.

With a strong American team, this year’s tennis could be the best yet since the sport returned to full-medal status in 1988.

Who to Watch

Venus Williams, USA: The Wimbledon champion has a chance at two gold medals: in singles, and in doubles with sister Serena.
