MEDALS: There are 64 players in the men’s and women’s draws and 32 pairs in men’s and women’s doubles.

OUTLOOK: Olympic participation by top tennis stars tends to bespotty. Missing from Sydney will be Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras, Mary Pierce,Martina Hingis and Nathalie Tauziat, all in the top 10. David Cupcaptain John McEnroe declined an invitation to coach the U.S. men.

With a strong American team, this year’s tennis could be thebest yet since the sport returned to full-medal status in 1988.
