Tre Mason: 'I let them down'
— -- PASADENA, Calif. -- Tre Mason delivered everything but the national title for the Auburn Tigers.
Mason rushed for 195 yards on 34 attempts -- including a 37-yard touchdown run to give the Tigers a 31-27 lead with 1:19 left -- but it wasn't enough to prevent a 34-31 loss to No. 1 Florida State on Monday night in the VIZIO BCS National Championship Game.
In the process, Mason broke Bo Jackson's school record of 1,786 yards rushing set during his 1985 Heisman season, and the Tigers finished the season as the first SEC team to lead the nation in rushing.
Mason finished with 1,816 yards and 23 touchdowns.
"It would be a lot better if I was holding up that crystal ball," he said.
Mason, who said he would speak with his family before deciding whether to leave Auburn early and enter the NFL draft, was left with an empty feeling after Auburn failed to bring home the title for its fans.
"I feel like I let them down," said Mason, a Heisman finalist who had his sixth straight 100-yard game.
"It's always going to be remembered, but it's always going to eat me up inside that we had beaten some of the top teams in the nation and fell short at the very end. It's pretty much like a book that was written. It was a crazy story."
