— -- CINCINNATI -- Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig was back in his team's starting lineup Monday, two days after straining his right hip flexor while sliding into second base attempting to break up a double play.

Puig, accompanied by trainer Stan Conte, tested the injury by jogging backward in the Great American Ballpark outfield Monday afternoon before the Dodgers' game with the Cincinnati Reds.

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said he had a pretty good inkling when the Dodgers boarded their flight from Colorado on Sunday night that Puig would be able to play.

"Even before he went out, Stan basically said, 'He feels good. He thinks he can play. I think he can play, but we're going to go through these little things to make sure,'" Mattingly said. "So, that was good."

Puig, who has been on base in 38 consecutive games he has played, is second in the major leagues with a 1.021 OPS. He leads all outfielders in voting for next month's All-Star Game.

Dodgers second baseman Dee Gordon, who also left Sunday's game with a hip injury, was not in the starting lineup Monday. Mattingly said Gordon is healthy enough to play, but he wanted to give him one more day off because the Dodgers are facing  Tony Cingrani. Gordon is hitting .208 against left-handers.
