— -- At a time when power savings is a hot topic, LG has begun shipping the first televisions that qualify for the LCD TV Association's GreenTV logo. The logo program was designed to encourage TV makers to reduce power consumption, and to help consumers make an informed choice on what kind of TV they're going to buy.

Integral to program is that TV makers implement the use of ambient light sensors, which automatically lower the TV's brightness in a dark room by decreasing power to the backlight. This results in a power savings of 30 to 60 percent.

The LCD TV Association says that in the future, the program will expand to include goals of reducing set size (which in turn reduces the carbon footprint of a set via smaller designs and packaging); and making packaging environmentally friendly.
