Mexican tourism mostly dodges Hurricane Jimena

— -- The popular Mexican resort of Los Cabos got a big breather this week, as Hurricane Jimena roared by without causing any significant damage to the southern Baja California towns of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo.

Hotels, highways and tourism services, including the airport and cruise port, were up and running shortly after Jimena made landfall Wednesday as a Category 2 storm near Magdalena Bay, a sparsely populated whale-watching spot on the Pacific side of the Baja peninsula.

In the northeast Caribbean, meanwhile, Erika was downgraded to a tropical depression Thursday as it tracked toward Puerto Rico. That storm, like Jimena in the Pacific, prompted cruise lines to alter course and substitute ports to avoid bad weather.
