Author Calls For Women to Share Photos of Themselves in Swimsuits to Celebrate Positive Body Image
Jennifer Weiner wants her Facebook page to become a "smorgasbord of positivity."
— -- Bestselling author Jennifer Weiner has called for women of all shapes to celebrate positive body image by sharing their swimsuit photos on her Facebook page.
In a Facebook live video, Weiner explained how she heard some young girls talking about how they were self-conscious about their body image when they wear a swimsuit.
"The other day I was listening to them talk about swimsuits and hearing them say things like 'I don't want to wear a tankini, my tummy is too big,'" Weiner said in the video, "and these are like really little girls, girls who are way too little to be caring."
She then called for all the viewers to post pictures of themselves in their swimwear on her Facebook page, "I want this to be a smorgasbord of positivity."
Weiner is the author of many novels, including "Good in Bed," "In Her Shoes" and "Best Friends Forever."
Weiner's campaign has resonated with many people, and her Facebook video has garnered more than 42,000 views.
"I’ve just been so amazed and touched at how many women were just like, ‘You know what? I’m not spending my summer on the sidelines. I’m in the water, with my kid,’" Weiner said on Good Morning America today. "So many women won’t put on a swimsuit, so let alone put it on, take a picture and put it on somebody’s public Facebook page -- I was expecting it was going to be, like, me and my mom maybe, and we did that, but it resonated with a lot of women."
"You can reset your perception of normal. I know this to be true. When I’m shopping online and it’s like size 2 person, size 2 person, size 2 person, I’ll feel lousy, and then I’ll see somebody my size wearing a dress and I’ll be like, ‘Oh, OK, so that is an acceptable way to look,’" Weiner added.
Weiner said her campaign is not just for women, but for boys, husbands, and fathers as well.
"They [boys] need to see this too because when they think about their girlfriends, think about their wives, then when they have daughters, when they’re fathers, they want to say to their daughters, ‘You know, you can get out there and swim’ or ‘go down that slide.'"
