Alleged Carjacker Drives Off With Kids Inside Car
Police say the suspect got in the car while the mom was inside paying for gas.
— -- Police in Los Angeles are on the hunt for a suspected carjacker who allegedly stole a car with two young children inside.
Surveillance video captured the frantic moment last Sunday when a mother sprinted through the parking lot of a 7-Eleven gas station in Redlands, California, after her car, which was being driven away with her two daughters inside.
The woman had parked her car at the gas pump and left the engine running, with her two daughters, ages 10 and 2 inside, while she went inside to pay.
Authorities say the suspect, 24-year-old Cory Michael Ahumada, got in the driver’s seat of the victim’s car and drove away.
"We could just hear her [the mom] screaming, 'No, no, no,'” said an eyewitness, Deriree Aguila. "It was horrible ... everybody in the store was crying. The clerks were crying.”
As the carjacker drove out of the gas station, the 10-year-old grabbed her younger sister and swung the back door open. Both girls safely tumbled out of the car, suffering only minor injuries, according to local ABC station KABC.
Ahumada was identified as a suspect through surveillance video footage showing him making a purchase at the 7-Eleven prior to the incident, KABC reported.
