Aug. 2, 2012— -- A Phoenix woman was jailed today on a first degree murder charge in the shooting death of her husband of seven years.

Rebekah Mellon, 31, called police Tuesday evening and was "uncooperative" when they arrived at the home that she n shared with her husband, Donald Mellon, 46, said James Holmes, spokesperson for the Phoenix Police Department.

"[She] called and said something was wrong with her husband. The officers get there and he is bleeding badly," Holmes said.

Firefighters worked on resuscitating Donald Mellon, who died a short time later at the hospital.

Rebekah Mellon became unruly and did not answer officers' questions, leading them to detain her until detectives arrived, Holmes said.

"She kept changing her story, telling us things that are untrue," Holmes said. "She said she doesn't know what happened to her husband."

Detectives worked through the night and by the next morning, had probable cause to arrest Mellon for murder.

"I can't share the evidence, but she clearly killed her husband. Let's put it that way," Holmes said.

It was not clear whether Mellon has hired an attorney.

Minutes before the shooting, Rebekah Mellon's 11-year-old son, who is not related to the victim, left for a sleepover at a neighbor's house, Holmes said.

The child is in the custody of his grandmother, according to police.
