— -- State Police Troopers clashed with concertgoers of a New Jersey venue Sunday, with people in the crowd tossing bottles and police later deploying tear gas.

The situation occurred outside of the Hot 97 Summer Jam concert at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford.

According to New Jersey State Police Captain Stephen Jones, the state police’s public information officer, people were trying to enter the stadium without tickets, despite the fact that the concert was sold out. Some people were trying to enter the concert “by climbing over fences and forcing their way through security personnel,” according to a New Jersey State Police statement

Additional troopers were called to patrol outside the stadium, and could be seen lining up, forming a barrier for concertgoers.

Janae Griffin, who drove up from Baltimore for the concert but wasn't able to get inside, said the parking lots outside were chaotic.

"People were throwing bottles across the crowd," she said. "We got into a confrontation with a guy who was deliberately trying to vandalize a police car and was just making it worse of a situation than it needed to be."

Police made multiple arrests outside the stadium, but the number of arrests hasn’t been released. It wasn’t immediately clear if there were any injuries.

Sunday’s concert featured such performers as Kendrick Lamar, Chris Brown, Trey Songz and Big Sean.

The radio station later released a statement acknowledging that refunds will be offered for ticket holders whose tickets were not scanned.
