Sheriff's Deputy Injured in Michigan Courthouse Shooting Released from Hospital

The Michigan inmate who shot James Atterberry Jr. was killed by bailiffs.

— -- A county sheriff's deputy injured in a shooting at a Michigan courthouse was released from the hospital Wednesday evening, police said.

The Berrien County Sheriff's Office said Deputy James Atterberry Jr. returned home and is recovering after being shot at by an inmate he was escorting back to his cell on the third floor of the courthouse on Monday.

Inmate Larry Gordon had first shot Atterberry then fatally shot two bailiffs, Joe Zangaro, 61, and Ron Kienzle, 63, Berrien County Sheriff Paul Bailey said.

Gordon then shot a civilian in the arm before he was killed by several court bailiffs, Bailey said.

Funeral services for both fallen officers were also announced.

The visitation for Zangaro will be Thursday at Starks & Menchinger Chapel in St. Joseph, Michigan. His funeral will be held Friday at the Mendel Center at Lake Michigan College in Benton Harbor.

Kienzle’s visitation will be Sunday, also at Starks & Menchinger Chapel. His funeral will be held Monday, also at Mendel Center at Lake Michigan College.
