Top Army Officer and Aides Rescue Motorist in Fatal Car Crash
One person was killed in the crash between a car and a Metrobus in D.C.
— -- The Army's top officer and his staff were among the first to help passengers trapped in a car that crashed into a mass transit bus Wednesday night in Southeast Washington, D.C.
Gen. Mark Milley, the Army's chief of staff, was riding in a two-car convoy from Joint Base Andrews in suburban Maryland to Fort Myer, Virginia, when they came upon an accident between a passenger car and a Metrobus.
According to an Army official, the convoy pulled over and four soldiers "rendered aid at the accident scene." Two soldiers assisted in pulling one person from the car before it was engulfed in flames. Another passenger in the car could not be rescued and was later pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.
The soldiers involved in assisting the surviving crash victim wish to remain anonymous.
The official said they "were simply doing what they believed was the right thing to do -- using their military training to help others."
Milley served as a senior military commander in both Iraq and Afghanistan before he became the Army's chief of staff in August 2015.
Washington, D.C.,'s Fire and EMS said the rescued passenger sustained critical injuries in the crash, while two people on the Metro bus had non-life threatening injuries.
