Authorities in Madison, Wisconsin, released the identities of the student and the teacher who were killed when police say a 15-year-old opened fire at the Abundant Life Christian School earlier this week.

The victims were identified as 42-year-old Erin M. West and 14-year-old Rubi P. Vergara. The victims' names were released late Wednesday evening by the Dane County Medical Examiner.

West and Vergara were both pronounced dead at the scene, according to the medical examiner.

The suspected shooter, 15-year-old Natalie "Samantha" L. Rupnow who was a student at the school, died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said. Officers did not fire their weapons.

The motive appears to be a combination of factors, Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes said at a news conference Tuesday.

"Everyone was targeted in this incident and everyone was put in equal danger," Barnes said.

However, police said they are still investigating whether there were specific targets in the shooting and are still working to determine a motive.

Police are looking into Rupnow's social media activity, disciplinary history and talking to classmates to try to understand her behavior at school and whether she might have been bullied, Madison police said in an online question-and-answer fact sheet about the case.

"We know most school shootings are preventable, and a shooter displays some type of warning sign," police said in the fact sheet. "Our team is looking to connect to anyone who may have interacted with Natalie Rupnow in the days and weeks leading up to the shooting."

A candlelight vigil was held Tuesday night at the state capitol for the victims of the shooting.

"Yesterday, the Madison community experienced a terrible and traumatic event," Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway said at the vigil. "We will never be the same, but we will get through and we will get through this together by relying on each other and taking care of each other.'

The shooting happened inside a classroom during a study hall with students from multiple grades, police said.
