July 28, 2010— -- Arizona's controversial illegal immigration law is set to take effect tonight, unless a federal judge acts to stop it.

Supporters of the law say it's stepping up to solve a serious problem, but opponents say the law encourages racial profiling.

Watch 'World News' for the latest on the immigration law tonight on ABC.

Today, protesters in Phoenix are planning to march from the state capital building and rally outside the office of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, a hard-line enforcer of immigration laws who's long been a target of critics. Activists are also planning to block access to federal offices, daring officers to ask them their immigration status.

Still, many people are fleeing the state out of fear of the new law. Apartments have been left vacant and children pulled from school. Police departments are preparing their jails, expecting a surge in arrests. Arpaio himself is promising a new sweep to enforce immigration laws on the books, regardless of whether the new law takes effect.

Argument over Arizona's law has raged for months, with deep division on both sides.
