March, 2, 2010— -- What drives people to do their best in the workplace? Is it the personal reward or the financial gain? Looking at top CEOs or multimillion-dollar athletes, one might conclude that financial gain is the best way to bring about the best results. But author Dan Pink disagrees, and he sets out to prove in his new book, "Driven," that the key to innovation and success lies in other motivators.

In today's Conversation, Diane Sawyer talks with Pink about what motivates people to do their best at work. Pink has studied how basic human motivators have evolved in the workplace. While the simple carrot-stick principle may have worked in the past, simple financial rewards now hinder the kind of creativity needed to achieve innovation and success in the workplace, he said.

Pink and Sawyer discuss how giving employees more creative freedom can improve the quality of performance, and why positive reinforcement can mean more than monetary rewards.

So tune in for an honest and insightful look at what motivates people to succeed.
