Sept. 29, 2010— -- The "Great Recession" may have ended, at least according to technical definitions, but plenty of evidence suggests it still has a wrenching effect on the choices Americans make in their lives.

According to The New York Times, fewer young people are tying the knot, delaying marriage until their finances are on stronger footing.

"Getting married is obviously a big step, and if you're not comfortable about your future, it makes sense that you'd postpone a big decision like this," Mark Mather of the Population Reference Bureau told the Times.

As part of our "Going Home" series on "World News With Diane Sawyer" this week, ABC News correspondents have returned to their hometowns to report on what people have done to survive these recessionary times.

In Louisville, Ky., Diane Sawyer spoke with employees at the Brown Hotel who have taken on additional job responsiblities, cross-training in new positions so that they can keep working keep working full-time.

In Syracuse, N.Y., David Muir saw how cuts in manufacturing and industrial jobs have dimmed the hopes of young Americans getting ready to enter the work force. They now believe they have to acquire several skills to move from industry to industry, pursuing multiple jobs.
