Nov. 15, 2006 — -- Twenty-somethings leave college and enter the work force with a lot of hope -- and a lot of debt. From skyrocketing student loans to maxed-out credit cards, more and more young people have racked up record amounts of debt and face decades of paying it back.

How can this generation of young adults survive, much less thrive, in the real world when they start out already strapped with so much debt? For many, the American dream seems far from reach.

ABC News is taking a look at the issue with the series "Young and in Debt" beginning Sunday, Nov. 19. The series will feature several young adults who are out in the world for the first time, trying to weed themselves out of debt while striving to achieve their personal and professional goals.

The young adults will meet with financial experts who will give them advice on how to better manage their debt.

USA Today will also begin a related six-week series Monday, publishing stories on "Young and in Debt" every Monday and Friday through Dec. 29 in the Money section. The series will profile several 20-somethings in financial trouble and offer solutions for all young people battling debt.
