"Grey's Anatomy" star Caterina Scorsone is opening up about a recent tragedy that struck her family -- and how they're moving forward.

"A couple months ago my house burned down," she wrote in an Instagram post shared Monday alongside a photo of the aftermath of the fire.

The actress explained that she saw "a river of thick black smoke ... filling the house" one night while she was getting her kids ready for bed and finishing bath time as "smoke began to seep up through the grout around the tub."

"One thing about fires: they happen fast," she continued. "I had about two minutes to get my three kids out of the house, and we escaped with less than shoes on our feet. But we got out. And for that I am eternally grateful."

Scorsone is mom to three daughters -- Eliza, 10, Pippa, 6, and Lucinda, 3 -- all of whom she shares with her ex-husband, Rob Giles.

The actress also revealed that "heartbreakingly" the family's four pets all perished in the fire, saying, "We are still sitting with that loss, but we are lucky we got to love them at all."

"This is not a post about a fire. This is a post about community. This is a love letter to the incredible people that showed up and the incredible ways that they did," she wrote, calling out the firefighters, investigators, neighbors and her "Grey's Anatomy" family as well as her own sisters for their help.

"What we learned is that the only thing that matters are the people (and beings) that you love. The only thing that matters is community," she continued. "We would not be here without it and we are so grateful. Thank you."

Scorsone ended her post by writing that the slideshow of photos she shared alongside the caption were "to honor the space we once called home, to say goodbye to the animals that loved us so well, and to celebrate that we have the only thing we ever really need: each other."

Several of Scorsone's "Grey's Anatomy" co-stars took to the comments to share their support, including Jake Borelli, Chris Carmack and Camilla Luddington, the latter of whom wrote, "What an incredible mom inspiration you are.. you are SO loved!"
