Dec. 13, 2012— -- intro: The race is on: nominees for the 2013 Golden Globe Awards were announced this morning, and predictions are already being made for who will walk away with the golden prize.

"Now, it's a horse race," Yahoo! Movies contributing editor Thelma Adams told ABCNews.com. "'Argo,' 'Les Miserable,' 'Silver Linings Playbook,' and my personal favorite, 'Zero Dark Thirty' -- they are all thoroughbreds."

Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" lead the nominations with seven, including best drama, while "Argo" and Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained" tied for second with five nominations a piece. "Les Mis," "Zero Dark Thirty" and "Silver Linings" each picked up four nominations.

Sally Field, who earned a supporting actress nomination for her role as Mary Todd Lincoln in the Spielberg film, told GMA this morning, "I feel so thrilled and proud to be part of this film. And I feel so incredibly glad that the Hollywood Foreign Press has recognized every one of us in the film. And Steven and Daniel and Tommy (Lee Jones) and Tony (Kushner, the screenwriter) and (composer) John Williams … I just feel so proud to be a part of it."

"Overall, it's the strongest year in recent memory," Adams added.

Still, there were a few snubs and surprises. Christopher Nolan and his final Batman installment "The Dark Knight Rises" were snubbed. Other directors who failed to make the cut, Tom Hooper for "Les Mis" and David O. Russell for "Silver Linings."

Anthony Hopkins got no love for "Hitchcock," which fizzled at the box office, making room for Richard Gere for his role in "Arbitrage." Matthew McConaughey was also snubbed for "Magic Mike." Meanwhile, the indie comedy "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen" got a surprising three nods for best comedy/musical and its stars Emily Blunt and Ewan McGregor.

On the TV side, "Mad Men" was largely snubbed, receiving only one nod for star Jon Hamm. Though "Modern Family" received nods for best comedy and supporting actress Sofia Vergara, its lead actors were overlooked.

quicklist: 1title: Best Picture, Drama: 'Argo'text: Out of so many strong films this year, the one that most audiences can agree on is Ben Affleck's "Argo."

"It stands up well. It's well directed, well made. It has the Cinderella story of the actor/writer who becomes a great director," Adams said about Affleck. "No one says, 'I didn't like it.'"

On the other hand, Adams said "Lincoln" has received more mixed reception -- with people who love it passionately and those who "groan."

"I can't see 'Lincoln' all the way," Adams said.

Her personal favorite, the Osama bin Laden hunt film, "Zero Dark Thirty," is the dark horse to win best picture.media: 17946957

quicklist: 2title: Best Picture, Comedy or Musical, 'Silver Linings Playbook'text: Though "Les Miserables" is sure to make more money, Adams puts her money on David O. Russell's feel-good dark comedy, "Silver Linings Playbook," about two lost souls who find a second chance at love.

"Silver Linings" is tied with "Lincoln" and "Les Miserables" for the most Screen Actors Guild nominations, with four. media: 17948792

quicklist: 3title: Best Actress, Drama: Jessica Chastaintext: "Zero Dark Thirty" star Jessica Chastain is the clear favorite, according to Adams.

"This is her moment," Adams said. "And she gets an extra point for every good movie she's made or got nominated for."

Chastain's role as a CIA analyst has already earned her a SAG nomination.media: 17946996

quicklist: 4title: Best Actor, Drama: Daniel Day-Lewis text: "No mystery here," Adams said. "Let's just say it's Daniel Day-Lewis and call it a day."

In addition to Lewis for his portrayal as Lincoln, his co-stars Sally Field, as Mary Todd Lincoln, and Tommy Lee Jones, as abolitionist firebrand Thaddeus Stevens, earned SAG nods -- as did the film, nominated for best ensemble cast.media: 17946969

quicklist: 5title: Best Actress, Comedy or Musical: Jennifer Lawrencetext: With the Globes split between comedy and drama, Adams believes that "Silver Linings Playbook" star Jennifer Lawrence has a chance to take home a Golden Globe.

"This is the place where she can win," Adams said.media: 17948834

quicklist: 6title: Best Actor, Comedy or Musical: Hugh Jackmantext: Adams believes Hugh Jackman will take home the Globe for his portrayal of convict Jean Valjean in "Les Miserables."

"He was great. He could sing. He was huge," she said. media: 17946909

quicklist: 7title: Best Supporting Actress: Anne Hathawaytext: In the supporting categories, drama and comedy or musical are combined, and Anne Hathaway as a diseased prostitute in "Les Miserables" tops them all, Adams said.

"She makes you cry," she said. "Once she makes you cry in that movie, you can't stop. That's a slam dunk."media: 17946878

quicklist: 8title: Best Supporting Actor: Phillip Seymour Hoffmantext: The actor category is more wide open, Adams said. But she believes that Phillip Seymour Hoffman has an edge.

"It's a way for the Globes to tip their hat to 'The Master," she said. "He really was brilliant."media: 17947087

quicklist: 9title: Best Director: Kathryn Bigelowtext: Adams is going with her personal favorite here: "Zero Dark Thirty" director Kathryn Bigelow, who lost out on a Globe for "The Hurt Locker" but went on to win the Oscar.

"I think 'Zero Dark Thirty' is even better than 'Hurt Locker,'" she said.

Adams added that Affleck is also a possibility. "He's certainly out there kissing babies," she said.media: 17947076

quicklist: 10title: Televisiontext: At last year's Golden Globes, "Homeland" won big, and Yahoo! TV's Dave Nemetz says the Showtime drama has a leg up this year.

"This season is maybe even better," Nemetz said. "It has to be the front runner, even in a crowded field."

That field includes "Breaking Bad," "Boardwalk Empire," "Downton Abbey" and newcomer, "The Newsroom."

Nemetz says "Homeland" stars Claire Danes, who won the Globe in 2012, and Damian Lewis, who, like his co-star, took home an Emmy, also have the edge. "I don't know if other people should even show up," Nemetz said. "Danes is destined to win.

Lewis, he said, has tougher competition from the likes of Jon Hamm, Bryan Cranston and newcomer Jeff Daniels, star of "The Newsroom."

In the comedy category, the field is more wide open, even with mainstay "Modern Family." HBO shows "Girls" and "Veep" could pull an upset with "Veep" star Julia Louis-Dreyfus the lead contender for best actress in a comedy. As for best actor in a comedy, even though three-time winner Alec Baldwin is among the nominees, his show is on the decline, leaving the field open for Jim Parsons, who is back in the running, Louis C.K., Don Cheadle and Matt LeBlanc.media: 17947066
