2015 Summer Box Office Second Biggest in History
"Jurassic World," "Inside Out" and "Avengers" made this a huge summer for film.
— -- It was a near record-setting summer for Hollywood.
"Jurassic World," "Inside Out" and "Avengers: Age of Ultron" led this summer's box office to one of its highest grossing in history, according to Variety. Domestic ticket sales from May 1 to Labor Day weekend hit $4.48 billion, as reported by Rentrak. That represents a little more than a 10 percent increase over last year's dismal numbers — the worst showing in seven years.
But the smashes of the summer of 2015 weren't enough to top the record set in 2013, when domestic box office hit $4.75 billion.
While overall domestic box office lagged 2013, one international record was set this year. With global grosses of more than $1 billion each for "Minions," "Jurassic World" and "Avengers: Age of Ultron," 2015 was the first time that three summer releases have each passed $1 billion globally.
This summer also had its share of would-be blockbusters that flopped. Among them were "Fantastic Four" and "The Man from U.N.C.L.E."
