The Zack Snyder-directed movie, starring Ben Affleck as Batman and Henry Cavill as Superman, made $166 million when it opened the weekend of March 25.
"Batman v Superman" was not well received by critics, scoring just 29 percent on Rotten Tomatoes' Tomatometer.
Disney's "Zootopia" took the No. 2 spot with $20 million in ticket sales. Disney is the parent company of ABC News.
The faith-based film "God's Not Dead 2" opened in fourth place over the weekend, collecting $8.1 million.
"Meet the Blacks," a parody of "The Purge," finished in eighth place, with a $4.1-million debut.
