— -- Beyoncé wasn't the headliner of the Super Bowl halftime show, though to many viewers, she might as well have been.

The singer, who dropped her single "Formation" a day before the big game, performed the new song on Sunday.

Her performance, the song and its accompanying music video have been praised by fans for its powerful message.

"It makes me proud," she told Entertainment Tonight backstage at the Super Bowl. "I wanted people to feel proud and have love for themselves."

"Formation" is Beyoncé's most political song to date. The music video references Hurricane Katrina and police brutality, among other issues.

Performing it for millions of viewers?

"It felt great," she said.
