— -- Britain's Prince William made an unexpected private visit earlier this morning to the homeless charity he supports, Centrepoint, where he made a surprise joke about the tresses of his wife, Kate Middleton.

As William, 32, was meeting with a group of young people at the charity, including an aspiring hairdresser, he indicated Kate's look may not be effortless and joked that her hair was a "nightmare."

William's charitable visit was the start of a busy day for the royal, who was later spotted arriving at Buckingham Palace with Kate and their son, Prince George, for his grandparents' annual Christmas lunch for members of Britain's royal family.

The queen and Prince Philip hold the festive event so that all the members of Britain's royal family can meet, including those who don't attend a Christmas church service followed by a family lunch at Sandringham on Dec. 25.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge arrived with 1-year-old Prince George in tow, belted into the back seat of the family's car with his nanny, Maria.

William's younger brother, Prince Harry, 30, arrived separately in a car driven by his protection officer.

The princes' father, Charles, the Prince of Wales, and his wife, Camilla, were also in attendance, along with other family members, including Princess Beatrice and Princess Anne's son, Peter Phillips, and his Canadian-born wife, Autumn.

In stark contrast to William's earlier joke, Duchess Kate looked glam as the lady in red wearing a pair of stunning chandelier earrings.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge earlier this week released three new snaps of the growing future King of England, Prince George.

The couple who have been completing renovations on their country home, Anmer Hall, on the Sandringham estate, are expected to spend the holidays in Norfolk while they get ready for the arrival of their second child, due next spring.

It would not be traditional for Kate's parents, James and Carole Middleton, to be invited to the Queens' Christmas Day lunch at Sandringham. With William and Kate's new family home at Anmer Hall providing lots of guest space, however, the Middleton clan is assured to spend time with the duke and duchess and Prince George at either Anmer Hall or in Bucklebury.
