CMA Awards 2015: Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley Sing, Make Zingers in Monologue
The hosts sang, made jokes and yes, teased Blake Shelton.
— -- Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood kicked off the 2015 CMA Awards on a high note -- with a song about 2015 and plenty of jokes.
Calling this year "cray cray," the two mentioned Caitlyn Jenner, Donald Trump and all the celebrity couples who have recently split.
"We can't ignore the breakup that really rocked our world. The one that's on everybody's mind," Underwood said. "Two people in this very room whom we all know and love..."
However, instead of panning to Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert, who announced this past summer that they were divorcing, the camera flashed to Miss Piggy and Kermit the Frog.
"On a completely unrelated topic," said Paisley after the joke, "Howdy Blake!"
From there, the co-hosts sang about the Ashley Madison hack ("Your cheating site will tell on you... Josh Duggar"), pointed out Justin Timberlake sitting in the audience, and did a sketch with William Shatner, who appeared on-stage as a Storm Trooper.
"'Star Wars' is my favorite science fiction movie franchise of all time," said Paisley before Shatner removed his helmet. He then added quickly: "Next to 'Star Trek'!"
"Carrie Fisher, my goodness," Shatner said, making a "Star Wars" joke, but also referring to Underwood by her married name. "I can’t wait to play in 'Star Wars' and be a storm trooper!"
After the co-hosts told Shatner that his act had been axed from the show, the monologue ended with Paisley pulling off his pants and taking out his cell phone, telling Underwood to pose for the naked host selfie.
"Miley [Cyrus] set the bar," he explained. "We try to reach the bar!"
