Survivors' families relieved this morning to be with their teenagers again. After narrowly escaping a fiery death in a tour bus. Just saw a very, very large explosion. And fireball. Reporter: The flames devouring a FedEx tractor-trailer that plowed across a median Thursday, slamming into the bus, that was taking more than 40 high school seniors and their chaperons to visit humboldt state university. The day began with laughter on the bus. Playing music. Playing games. It was a great time on the bus. Reporter: The fun, interrupted violently, four hours from their destination. All of a sudden, people started screaming. As I look up, the bus driver slams on the brakes. And it's a loud screeching noise. I'll never forget it. The FedEx truck was on fire. My first instinct was, I have to get out of here. Reporter: Students scrambling to escape the bus. A nearby resident who ran to the scene was horrified to see some of them on fire. Is it hard for you to look at that? Yeah because I see people in there. Reporter: Ten people were killed in the crash, including both drivers. Ntsb investigators are trying to understand why the truck driver lost control. We would appreciate. Reporter: Ntsb officials say they would not speculate about the crash. It was likely human error or mechanical. But the driver of another car that was also involved in the collision, said she saw the truck on fire as it was coming across that median. Officials will obviously take her account into consideration. They say it could be months before they come to a conclusion about the cause.
