Where mark felt deep throat spoke to Bob Woodward over series of several months and and -- the Watergate scandal to ahead in this parking garage actually scheduled for demolition. In a little while -- one of the last opportunities to be here and we're joined by Max Collins who is a scholar any Watergate expert also the author of the book leak. Why mark felt became deep throat while the program sir thanks for having me there's a popular notion. Leaks around this that -- about exposing it. -- presidency you have a different. Right I believe that Woodward was essentially. An asset of cells in this campaign to become FBI director. He thought he was a natural there because effectively. Hoover was no suffering from old agent -- in the last year of Hoover's life was running the bureau. How the weeks actually work had the meetings go to take us through it -- paints a picture of. Forty years ago and and this rock was certainly nowhere near the condition where it's in now where might be demolished. They set up -- signaling system. Where Woodward was supposed to move of pot on his balcony which had a red flag unit. To a certain location if you wanted to meeting with felt that meant that they were going to have a meeting. You know late that night early in the next morning in the garage. -- some time afternoon night. And would word was not allowed to take notes he would have to race home a race back to the Washington Post and write down from memory everything Feld had told them. -- what kind of information was transmitted Friday the space and how would that information potentially. Have -- up to Nixon as is undermining the FBI. Well anything about it. The FBI would be embarrassing to the White House is of course. They were trying to make the case that the White House and the campaign were not connected. To the -- and so even. Any detail that kept the story in the news would be infuriating to the president and about a month or two after the break and he decided that gray wasn't enough for the job. And indeed he thought felt. Should be the man felt didn't know this so we kept -- leaking. And as a matter of fact. One meeting here on October 9. The day before the centerpiece story in the Washington Post. Was the leak that so infuriated the White House that they found out who was doing the leaking and they found I was mark felt. They felt no pun intended that they couldn't fire him because he knew too much. What was -- the -- of that critical centerpiece. -- -- was that the campaign to harass the Democrats using dirty tricks was connected to the Watergate break in. It was a explosive story appeared on. Front page of the Washington Post and was the one that influence the senate and judge so Rick that there had to be something much more to -- -- -- the administration was living on. What's the larger lesson -- you about why people leave well in Washington. You know they're different kinds of leaks and anyone in the bureau would have been infuriated. Had they known felt was doing this. But Woodward turned him into hero when the FBI instigated its own investigation of the leak. Which they did. Mark -- -- suspect number one -- deep throat. And they and they talked to felt secretary said well. I don't really know who. Felt was leaked YouTube but there was a guy Bob Woodward -- used to.
