Transcript for Fashion Editor Puts Her Foot Down on Sky-High Heels
When a fashionista put her foot down and said no to high-heels, at least in an online column, it got quite a lot of attention. Some folks disagree. Others conceded she had a point. Deborah roberts has the story. Reporter: They're a must-have for any fashionista. Sky-high heels. A staple of fashion shows and in glossy magazines. If "the devil wears prada," they must be prada heels. That's all. Reporter: But now, lauren sherman is saying, no thanks. You've sworn off of heels completely? Yes. Reporter: After twisting her ankle, she wrote about it for elle.Com. I started wearing flats. Reporter: Was that an aha moment? It was. It was like, wow. The thing that I've always wanted to do is also what everyone wants to do right now. Reporter: Say it's not so. Women swearing off their painful sky-highs for comfort? Podiatrists hope so. To wear high heels, the muscles, tendles and ligaments and bones of that foot have to work considerably harder. Much more difficult for the foot to maintain stability and balan balance. Reporter: After so many years of suffering for beauty and kicks, maybe a new day is dawning. Do you think average women are driving this whole thing? Or is this the fashion world just sort of dictating something new? It's both. Everything feeds off of each other. And women want to look great. But women are also practical. Reporter: I'm not ready to turn in my jimmy choos just yet. I'm wondering if lauren might be on to something. Do I look as good in these? I love them. And I think especially the length of your skirt, looks really cute with flats. Yes. I think they look fantastic. Reporter: I must admit, these feel so much better. You may have noticed, in shoe departments, flats are everywhere. Women are spending close to $5 billion a year on heels, the sales of flats are up nearly 4%. If you're willing to take the plunge, you have a lot of company in low heels. You're wearing some right now? And, sam, in honor of you, sparkles. Great. Our viewers are checking in on this. One tweeted, I did this. I love my pretty sandals and flats. I don't miss heels at all. And another tweeted. No. Heels are a girl's best friend. #Gma. Not all flats are comfortable. And not all high heels are uncomfortable. It depends. Down a middle road, as always. Everything in moderation. Going on to you, george.
