To the latest in that bizarre custody battle involving a florida couple arrested for kidnapping their two young sons from the boys' grandparents and taking them to cuba. For the first time we're seeing the two brothers and their grandparents are speaking out. Abc's gio benitez has the story. Reporter: Looking at their smiles you wouldn't know these two little boys were allegedly kidnapped taken to cuba on a five-day, 318-mile journey by boat. We have not asked the boys anything about the journey. We're just treating it as they went on a vacation. Reporter: As 2-year-old chase shows off his toy trucks and 4-year-old cole playfully poses for the camera their biological parents sit behind bar, joshua and sharyn hakken lost custody of the boys in june. But last week, police say they tied up the children's grandmother, took the boys from her home and boarded this sailboat to havana. They were under the state custody. He's not supposed to be near them. Reporter: They have been told everybody heard about their sailboat trip to cuba, another country as they called it and air airplane ride back to america and that everyone wants to take their picture. You never expect something like this to happen to you. But I'll tell you, going through it, you just take one step at a time. Reporter: Even the family dog, nattie made that long journey to cuba. Cuban authorities sent it back to the u.S. With the children and their fugitive parents. The hakkens faced the judge for the first time thursday in tampa wearing red jumpsuits. The judge ordered that they stay locked up. The couple has been charged with kidnapping and child neglect. They've also now been charged with child abuse. If convicted, they could spend the rest of their lives in prison.
