Transcript for '12 Years a Slave' Star Lupita Nyong'o on the Future: 'I'm Curious, I'm Excited, I'm Ready'
Less than a week until Oscar Sunday. We're counting down with Lupita nyong'o. Born in Mexico. Grew up in Kenya. We're showing you this again, josh, the walking scene. It's her first big movie role since graduating from the Yale school of drama. She has Hollywood buzzing. Lupita, right here. Reporter: And the fashion world swooning. Lupita nyong'o is this year's Cinderella story. Have you decided. You can't give away any secrets to the Oscar dress. Any hints? Have you -- Mum's the word. Have you decide snd how's that? Mum's the word. Reporter: I love it. It's her searing performance in "12 years a slave" as patsy, the strong-spirited slave that made Hollywood sit up and take notice. According to your director, Steve Mcqueen, he said he auditions no less than 1,000 actresses for the role. You show up on the set and you're with these seasoned peers. What did they teach you? Well, they taught me for sure that the job doesn't change no matter how much practice you have. And I remember in my first rehearsal with Michael, he was like, how are you doing? And I said, I'm really nervous. He said to me, so am I. And that was so good to hear. Reporter: When did you first realize that your performance, your character, patsy, really connected with people? Very early on. There was a couple. An older couple that had juts come from the film. The older gentleman, he could barely speak. But all he said was thank you. And he -- reached out for an embrace, and I held him. And he was just -- broken. And that was the first time I realized, wow, this is bigger than all of us. Reporter: She is enjoying this time in her life. She has an impressive collection of selfies posted on instagram. Oh, I made a selfie with Lupita. We have some of your selfies here. A red carpet game. Asking you to come up with a one-word caption for each of the selfies you have posted. Dream. Oprah is dream. Dream. Reporter: Meryl Streep. Life. Reporter: My personal favorite? Gladiator. Reporter: Expectations are high for her future. She's not letting the pressure get to her. I feel that to focus on the reactions and expectations will only cripple me. Reporter: You're not as concerned about what's next? I'm not concerned. I'm curious. I'm excited. I'm ready. She is a sheer delight. So talented. Was wonderful to spend time with her. We would like to thank the bohemian national hall in new York for the lovely, lovely venue. We're covering all things Oscar. You're going from one cam to the next. I'll be sitting down with an explusive one-on-one interview with Ellen DeGeneres. Coming up -- take the shot. Mary lambert. Mary lambert performing live.
