Transcript for Missing California Fireman's Dog Found
Now to the break in the case of a fire fighter missing for more than a week. Lost in treacherous California mountains. They found the dog, the dog he wanted to find when he disappeared. David Wright has the latest. Reporter: As of this morning, it's one full week of searching for Mike herdman who a fend says vanished in the California wilderness while chasing after his dog. Overnight, a vigil held for him in his home town, arcadia -- late Sunday the first bit of good news for friends and family anxiously waiting at the trailhead. After two failed attempts, rescuers managed to find and save his dog, duke. As soon as they called the dog, the dog came over. It's obviously very tired, but appears to be in good health and being seen by a vet already. Reporter: But still no sign of duke's owner. Herdman's buddy told authorities when he ran off, he was wearing only a t-shirt and shorts. Even for the most experienced back woodsman, this is a challenging landscape. Remote and inaekccessible, he's out there barefoot, no boots. One of the rescuers is in intensive care because of a rattle snakebite. Four others treated for heat exposure and other injuries. The question is could he be live? The most experienced outdoorsman can use the back country to survive. We hope that's going on. Reporter: Despite speculation there might be more to the story, authorities insist this is a straight-forward search and rescue. Any suggestion of foul play? Not at this time. Reporter: Specialized drones are scouring the area. Authorities will scale back the search effort today. Just a dozen searchers today. The chances of finding him alive clearly dwindling. David Wright, ABC news. Thank you.
