Transcript for Royal Baby: Prince William Opens Up About Being a Father
Prince william's first interview since becoming a new dad. It's coming in as I said right as we speak. Here's what we have so far. Any new parent knows you're only too happy to show off your new child and thinking it's the best ever. You were comfortable there. I felt, again, it was -- it's not somewhere I enjoy being but I know that in the position I'm in that's what's required of me to do and I think it's one of the things that I'm, you know, it's nice that people want to see george so, you know -- I'm just glad he wasn't screaming. Came out of the car seat we doing that. Fathers around the planet will be cursing you for doing it so easily. Believe me, it wasn't my first time and I know there's speculation that. I was terrified I would -- it would fall off or wasn't going to close properly so I had actually practiced with that seat. Your decision to drive off, i remember that moment as well. That was the most nerve-racking thing for me having my family in the car but that was something you were clearly determined to do. Well, I can be. I'm as independent as I want to be and same as catherine and harry. We've all grown up differently to other generations and I very much feel if I can do it myself I want to do it myself and there are times you can't do it yourself and the system takes over or it's appropriate to do things different lew by I think driving your son and your wife away from hospital was really important to me and I don't like fuss so much easier to do it yourself. And you didn't stall. It's an automatic. Prince william, let's talk about it with our royal expert tina brown author of "the diana chronicles" and editor in chief of the daily beast. What a charming interview. He's such an charming guy. All those people skills that his father never had but he really does. Also making the point very clearly that he's very self-conscious about doing that. Absolutely and, you know, the fact that he's done it himself with the car and even though they seem accessible it's been thought about too because he's trying to make the point I'm a regular, you know, accessible modern prince. Hhad to practice the car seat. I don't blame him because I had to do the car seat -- I had no idea how to do it the first time. Would not have been very amusing if he couldn't do it. We've seen them break so much new ground in so many ways. What does this peen for the little baby george? Well, I think, you know, what was so great actually about princess diana, she herself raised william and harry to be regular princes. They went down water slides and went to the zoo and she took them to see homeless shelters, things that never happened before so I think you'll see an even greater path he will take his child in the same way, kate and he. They will obviously try to do everything they can to make this child it modern and unpretentious and not fussy and grand and all those things a royal prince is. Now we've heard from prince william. In a few weeks we'll hear from kate for the first time. That will be an epic -- she's playing it so flawlessly. She's been there with her parents, you know, in the country. So great to see it in his face. He looks like a very happy dad. He's so content. When he mentioned his dog that he's crazy about you feel this is a family now and it's very appealing. Certainly is. Tina brown, thanks very much.
