Question: What are the side effects associated with buspirone treatment for anxiety disorders, and are there any long-term risks associated with buspirone treatment?

Brian Brennan, M.D., McLean Hospital

Answer: Buspirone in general is a very well tolerated medication. There are a few side effects that are associated with it. The most common ones are things like restlessness, insomnia, headaches, some nausea or upset stomach, lightheadedness, and occasionally numbness or tingling in the extremities. As far as long term risks, there really have not been any long term risks associated with the use of buspirone.
