Can Support Groups Help With Depression Management? What Kind Of Support Groups Exist?

Question: Can support groups help with depression management? What kind of support groups exist?

Bruce Cohen, M.D., Ph.D., McLean Hospital

Answer: Support groups can be a key piece of illness and health management and they're available from many different sources -- clinics, hospitals, and advocacy groups all can give you access to support groups. You can call them directly, you can reach them online. Support groups can be run by professionals, support groups can be run by peer counselors who themselves have experienced the same illness that you have. It's a matter of personal choice which way to turn to get help -- but support groups are a good idea.
