Question: How can exercise be used to help me deal with my arthritis, and are certain types of exercises better than others?
Answer: When dealing with arthritis, we want low impact aerobic activities that don't pound on the joint. We also want to promote motion.
One of the hallmarks of osteoarthritis as far as symptoms go is loss of motion, stiffness, and the resulting pain and limitation of function. Therefore any exercise we want to do would involve low impact and promote motion. Swimming, cross-country skiing, walking, cycling are all low impact aerobic activities that I advise for my patients who have osteoarthritis.
