Should I Keep My Children Home From School If Someone Has Swine Flu At School?

Question: Should I keep my children home from school if someone has swine flu at school?

William Schaffner, M.D., Vanderbilt University

Answer: If there's someone who has swine flu, this new H1N1 influenza at school, a decision will be made whether or not to close the school and you'll hear about it from your school's principal or your child's teacher -- that'll be really quite evident. Otherwise, I would go ahead and send the child to school but keep remembering to tell that child to wash their hands, [and] stay away from people who are coughing or sneezing.
