— -- Three firefighters from the town of Shediac in New Brunswick, Canada, took to the ice for a rescue.

A young moose fell into the partially frozen Shediac River this morning and became trapped, surrounded by ice. The three emergency worked hacked through the thick ice with axes, working to extricate the wet and freezing animal. Thanks to their persistent efforts, while standing in frigid waters, the animal was successfully freed and led to shore.

Canada is home to a robust Moose population. But, according to biologist Nicholas DeCesare, who spoke to The New York Times in 2013, the numbers of the beloved animal have been declining across North America and scientists are working to understand why.
