Florida Firefighters Rescue Dog From Apparent Sinkhole

— -- A fire department's Facebook post documents the rescue of a dog from a Florida sinkhole, including digging out the pooch, administering oxygen to the exhausted dog and carrying it away on a stretcher.

Firefighters in Seminole County, Fla., responded to a 911 call on Dec. 29, from the dog’s owner who told officials the dog was stuck in what appeared to be a sinkhole, according a new post this week on the Seminole County Fire Department’s Facebook page.

When firefighters arrived, around 75 percent of the dog’s body was trapped in the hole, according to the post.

“The dog was extremely lethargic and in obvious distress due to its lengthy struggle to get free,” reads the Facebook post. “The engine company…immediately went into action by using shovels and other tools to carefully dig out the buried dog.”

Photos posted on Facebook by fire officials, who could not be reached today by ABC News, show that firefighters administered oxygen to the dog after freeing him.

Officials then took the dog to Geneva Oaks Animal Hospital in Geneva, Fla., where they walked the dog into the hospital’s “Animal Clinic” strapped to a small stretcher.

The Facebook post ends on a happy note, with a report from the dog’s owner, who was not named, that the dog is, recovering and “wagging” its tail.
